We are Christy and Richard Bracken. We moved to Port St Joe a few years ago to enjoy Florida's stunning Gulf Coast, walk on the beautiful white beaches, stroll through our charming downtown cities and we cannot forget the fresh seafood. We noticed something almost immediately... we were over filling our trash cans every week. That is when we realized our area does not have a curbside recycling service. We thought about the thousands of vacation guests coming to Florida Gulf Coast experiencing the same thing, wondering where they are to put their recyclables. This included plastic bottles, plastic grocery bags, soda cans, glass and other packaging. We are avid recyclers. We thought about ways we could do our part. We started holding out certain items from the trash that we knew of drop off locations. The PSJ fire department accepts aluminum cans. There is a cardboard drop-off location in Apalachicola. And we save glass bottles and jars to take on our trips back home. There are also volunteer collections at some community events. We began talks with other residents, business owners and visitors. We found that most people want to recycle, but there is not a convenient way to do it. After much thought, we concluded we want, need and must develop a program for the North Florida area. We presented our idea to organizations, such as the SBA and Chamber of Commerce. We are thrilled and excited to have received tremendous community support. This journey began with our own overflowed trash can to creating Florida 27 Recycle, a business helping residents, businesses and vacationers make a huge impact on reducing our landfills. Together, we will make a difference!
